Are frogs and toads difficult to care for as pets?

What would I need to know before I bought a frog or toad?

well right now i have 1 toad & 3 frogs. they are not hard to take care of!

things you need:
a 20 gallon tank (for most species), fake or real plants, a water bowl, dirt, moss, a water bottle, a log, crickets, & a heating lamp. oh & dont forget the tank lid!

good beginner frogs, the amount of crickets 1will eat a day, & the amount that can fit into a 20 gallon tank:
whites tree frog: 4-6crickets, 1-3 frogs
grey tree frog: 2-4crickets, 1-5 frogs
fire bellied toads: 2-3crickets, 1-6 frogs
cuban tree frogs: 3-5crickets, 1-4 frogs

things you need to know:
frogs & toads are cold blooded this means their body temperature changes with the temperature around them. that is why they need a heating lamp. the temperature in the tank should be 70-76 f. at night the temperature should drop about 5 f. they should have a side where they can go to get out of the heat if they want. this is partly what the log is for. the lamp should be kept on 1 side of the tank. it should never be kept over the water bowl or the log, it will over heat! near it is ok just not directly over it the tank should be sprayed 2-3 times a day. they will dry out & die because they like a humid climate. the humidity should be 80%-90%. the moss in the tank should help keep the humidity level up. you can get a thermometer & hgrometer to where you can keep a check. the thermometer should be placed on the warm side of the tank & the hygrometer on the cool side. the log is for if he wants to hide or get out of the light. the plants are so they will have something to climb on. 1 other thing. always wash your hands before & after touching them. some have toxins, its not harmful unless you put your hands in your mouth though.

good luck!!! i really hope this helps (it took me a long time to type all of this)!!!!!!

Taking care of a toad?

I am getting a toad in my terrarium.
Does anybody have any advice for me about what they eat? etc.

ooo fun =] i have had toads since i was about 6…and i'm 15 now. i caught them in the creek, and still have 1 =P

if it's a baby toad, you can go dig up some worms at a park and divide them up; that's what we did. or just buy the very small "pinhead crickets" at petsmart or something like that.

as it gets bigger, feed it bigger crickets. they like basically any kind of bug also.

and make sure you have a little dish of water in there….maybe some soil or dirt too. we keep our toad in a mixture of sand (like from a playground) and soil – no fertilizer though!!

if you keep it in a big enough home, it most likely will live a long time. my dad said 20+ years could be common =P like i said, we've had our toad for about 7-8 years now, and had another one for about 5. anyways, good luck!!

Re: Tadpole care

Thanks PANDAzPETz for the ideas, getting reptile carpet, the tadpole care (that got a bunch of stress out of me), the fire bellied newt and toads, the tadpole, a filter covered in those cool cheap convenient suction cup plastic plants, the floating island, and the tank in general. how do you take care of a toad??

ok..well me and my friend were walking home and we saw a toad so we caught it..now i wanna know how to take care of it!we have it in a big bucket thing and theres grass,,buggs,,and stuff in it..what else should we do??

Keep it in a 20 gallon terrariium. Provide a heat lamp. crickets and a big bowl of water(change daily) The bedding shpuld be peat moss and driftwood. Make sure to put a piece of food in the tank when you empty in crickets for the toad to eat. If crickets get REALLY HUNGRY then they might turn on your toad so give them something like a piece of bread of lettuce for the insects to munch upon.

Baby toad care?

Ok, To make this simple, I got about 5 tadpoles from my teacher in science class. His are still tadpoles and still eat algae. I was told to feed it algae on a previous yahoo answers. But now I have the tadpole has 4 legs and barely a tail left. These have been born in captivity before we picked them up out of the lake so they dont know what to do in the wild. I need to know what a proper tank should have. (right now i have 2 rocks. 1 with algae and another out of water. He likes going to the one out of the water.) The last one we had died. and we dont want this one to. So what should we feed him? Thats all I basicly need to know. Could small ants work? My mom said she knows where they are. Also he is about a inch long. So if you know what kind of toad this is, it will help a lot. Even an idea for it. So that you for reading!!!!

Frogs and toads hunt for food primarily on land. It needs insects and other small invertebrates to eat, ants are not good food. You can't just have a rock for it to sit on it needs land. If you try to feed it on a rock the food will jump into the water and be gone. It doesn't matter that the eggs hatched in captivity, they still know how to survive free. Nobody can tell you what kind of "toad" you have. If the eggs were in strings they were toad eggs and if they were in a blob they were frog eggs. Your Clue about an inch long well that fits almost every single frog on earth at some point in it's life. Where did it come from? What color is it's back, bottom, chin, legs, etc? Does it have spots?
