My dog dug up a salamander how do I care for it?

admin on September 26th, 2008

I live in Illinois and it still gets below freezing at night. If I put it back in my yard the dog will just dig it up again. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Since the salamander is still hibernating you need to let him continue to do so. Get a small plastic storage container (like for leftovers) get some moss. Drill some holes into the container for ventilation and fill it with damp moss. Put the salamander in the moss and let him bury himself. Put the container in a dark cool place and check on it only once a week to ensure the moss remains moist. After the last frost let the salamander go.

Hope this helps.

  2. listen to my spider, and DON'T touch it with dry skin, dry skin to a salamander is like a electric sander to the face for us.

  3. put dirt in a jar then put your salamander in then when its not so cold release him.^_^
